Organic gardening is gaining popularity today because people are becoming more health conscious. Having a garden at home, has in fact been a trend in a lot of communities in the country. However, there is a lot about organic gardening that people do not know. By what the name suggests, organic gardening pertains to growing plants without adding synthetic products such as commercial pesticides and fertilizers.

Although this is the case, it does not mean that you let it be attacked by pests and insects. There are other ways to protect your plants against these natural enemies. However, do not expect it to look as beautiful as those grown under the care of pesticides and insecticides. The best way to keep your fruits and vegetables healthy is to add organic matter to the soil.

What is an organic matter, you might ask. These are plants decays, animal wastes, kitchen leftovers and compost. These nurture the soil when added. They enhance the capacity of the soil to hold enough water for the plants and they provide the essential nutrients as well. Soil is very important when growing plants. It needs to have balance. It should not only be able to hold water. It should also provide enough space for the water to circulate.

You need to consider several things as well before you start gardening. Aside from the soil, you should also think about the type of plants you are going to plant. Plants have different requirements. If you are gardening in a shady area, look for plants that love moist and humid environment. If you are planting in an open land, you should grow plants that love a lot of sun. You should also know the other needs of the plants. Find out how often you should apply organic fertilizer. You should also know how often you need to water them.

In order to know if something is wrong with your plants, you should be able to monitor it regularly. If you check it on a regular basis, you will notice if something is wrong with it. When you do, you have to investigate what the actual problem is. You need to identify it before you respond so that you can deal with the problem accordingly.

Planting several types of plants in the garden is also better. Although you can grow plants that are the same, there is a higher risk of losing them all at once if it is attacked by pests and insects. You should also be aware of what the beneficial organisms are. These are those organisms that terminate pest and insects that attack your plants. They help your garden in achieving balance. You still have to be careful with these organisms though as they can also cause damage to your plants.

You can also use organic pesticides available in the market today. However, you have to be cautious when applying them. You do not have to spray your plants with these pesticides every time you feel that your plants are under attack. Make sure that you identify the problem first before taking actions.
