In the course of ensuring safety in every household, the imminent rise of unintentional deaths due to fire accidents have marked a significant percentage in the government statistics. This is a fatal tragedy that may be possibly avoided with the right device at hand. With the invention of smoke detectors in 1969 by BRK Electronics, household and family safety will never be the same again.

It is important to note how effective smoke detectors are in the quest for a zero percent incidence of fire-related accidents. In reports gathered by authorities and fire protection agencies, some of the common causes of this tragic accident are due to unattended kitchen appliances, faulty electrical wirings and even the lack of carefulness in occupants of the house aside from the obvious crime of arson among others. However, if you have devices to detect pending fire in certain areas of your house, then you are quite sure that you can remedy the problem before it worsens. Hence with the advent of this remarkable security gadget, an increasing number of fire incidents have declined and are under control so as not to cause any massive damages to property and people.

There are generally two types of smoke detection alarms with different features for commercial and mass residential buildings and those installed in homes or residential units. The former are connected to a fire system alarm which gives reliable signal and warning to fire protection authorities. The latter on the other hand are giving out fire warnings through an audible or visual alarm set in the detector itself. Most of the common types of detector are enclosed in a plastic disk-shape container with varying shapes and sizes depending on the manufacturer and the product model. However standard size for detectors is six inches or 150 millimeters in diameter and 25 millimeters or one inch in thickness.

Smoke detectors also vary in terms of its many features and functionality such as the photoelectric and ionization sources. There are also heat sensors built in the units in order to accurately detect smoke and pending cases of fire. Ionization type of detector works through charging two plates where ionized particles pass in between. The moment the smoke gets into the plate, it triggers the flow of negative and positive atoms and this causes the alarm. Photoelectronic on the other hand gives alarm when the smoke passes through the photoelectric cell and light beam. These two methods are still currently used in modern smoke detection units.

Home owners must basically know how to properly use their smoke detectors since there are salient features that differentiate one type from another. For instance, there are types which are battery-powered either through nine volt or with lithium batteries. Others are hard-wired and are connected in other systems such as bed shakers for those fire incidents during sleeping hours. Those who are audibly impaired must install detectors which give out strobe lights instead of loud audible sounds.

Smoke detectors are indeed indispensable tools for safety and security of your property and most of all, your priceless life and those of your loved ones.
