Attics are usually underused at home. Most of the time it is left empty or it becomes the ideal storage room for your extra stuff. Some people just dumps their pile of boxes and bags in it, keep it there for years and ends up forgotten.
However, if you have attics at home, you must not use it right away as your storage area. An attic should be properly evaluated before converted into your dumping room. It lacks the structural quality of your living spaces; hence, it could be unsafe to stack a pile of heavy stuff in it. Aside from that, your stuff could be destroyed in the long run. You may have a case of moisture problems, mildew or even molds, if sources of these problems were not identified earlier.
So if you want to use your attic for storage, while given the assurance that it will be safe to use, here are some tips:
Properly ventilate and insulate the room
In case you are not aware, molds proliferate in a moist environment. They can rapidly multiply in numbers and when this happens, it could destroy your items and cause various health problems among the household members. The absence of proper ventilation and insulation can cause the development of condensation and build up of humidity. Your attics should have windows, vents or you can opt for mechanical ventilation. The latter means use of electric fans. This device can keep the air circulating.
For insulation, make sure it is improved. Insulation works by slowing down the diffusion of heat as well as absorption.
Access and Support
If you have an attic at home, you want to make it accessible. This allows you to effectively transport your stuff. If there is no access, you cannot possible enter the room, right? So if you want to use it, you must be able to find a door or pathway to it. You can install stairs or perhaps a pull-down ladder.
As to support, the ceiling of your second-storey may not be that solid. If a human steps on it, probably it would break down easily. Therefore, you should also be looking into this and add additional support so that your attic flooring can bear the additional weight (including yours).
Some pests love to hide in areas, where they cannot encounter humans. If your attic has not been converted into any room, then pests would be able to thrive in these areas. Once you convert it into storage, your stuff and the boxes piled in the room would become their additional hiding place. So, when you use your attic for storage, use the space efficiently. And constantly check the space for their existence, so that you can perform pest control measures right away. Different control measures vary according to types of pest present.
Lastly, the best thing you can do is to keep the room clean at all times. As much as possible, avoid eating in the attic. Who would love to do that anyway? But just in case, eating in the attics lead to existence of scraps, which by the way can attract a number of pests.
