When you move, you have to do a lot of things. One of the primary concerns is packing your things. Packing is not just as simple as throwing your stuff in one container and off they go for transportation. There are many things you have to learn in packing. In fact, you have to adopt a certain kind of system. Doing this helps you get things done smoothly.

Benefits of Systematic Packing

So why do you have to be systematic in packing? Here are some of the reasons:

  1. You know exactly where your stuff is placed.

  2. You will have your peace of mind knowing that your things are properly secured for transporting.

  3. It makes it easier for your movers to transport your things because they know what to do, how to transport it and at the same time, know where it will be placed.

  4. It speeds up the packing because you have all that you need to complete the task.

  5. You get to bring what is needed and discard items that are useless.

Packing like the pros

Some of you may prefer do-it-yourself packing so that you can keep track of your things and to save money as well. There's nothing wrong with this, except if you have no clue what to do, you will probably spend days and days of packing and still not finish the task before the movers arrive. But if you want to do it like the pro, here are some tips to put in mind:

  1. De-clutter your things. When you do this, you are actually sorting out your stuff. This is the best way to determine what you will be bringing with you into your own homes and what will be disposed. The best way to do the segregation is to have containers for those items that will be kept, to be trashed and to be given away.

  2. Collect boxes ahead of item. You need to estimate the number of boxes to use. Aside from that, you also have to obtain protective layers for items that cannot be stored in the box. Bubble wraps, clothes and newsprints are good materials for adding cushion to fragile items. You also have to obtain materials for labeling. You have to do this to identify which ones are fragile, the kind of items stored and what area of the new home will it be placed. Moreover, you also have to gather your luggage and other big bags to be used to pack your stuff like clothing and other valuables.

  3. When you pack your things, group similar items together. Kitchen utensils should be grouped together. Also sharps must be placed in one box. Things for the living room like figurines should also be placed in one box, as well as the linens. Doing it this way makes it easier to unpack and arrange.

  4. If an appliance or furniture can be taken down into parts, then do it. This makes it easier for handling. Moreover, keep the disassembled parts together and use the protective coverings to prevent scratches, especially when there is friction.

  5. Always clean your stuff before packing them. You do not want to bring dirt and grime into your new home. Doing it this way makes it easier for you to arrange your things.

As you pack your things, make sure you create a list of things that has been placed in the boxes. This is the best way to monitor if you have everything covered.

One more tip: plan ahead of time. Even if the date of the move is still tentative, you have to act now. Do all of these things ahead of time and you will surely have trouble-free move. Moreover, you can allot your remaining time worrying on other stuff like buying things for the new place, change of addresses and other personal matters.
