If you are trying to sell your house, then you must consider what it looks like to the person who is driving up to it for the first time. The front of your home is the first thing that a potential buyer is going to see, and you want it to make an impact. Whether it makes a negative or positive impact is entirely up to you, and whether you know how to create curb appeal. Real estate agents know that a house that has great curb appeal will often sell itself.

A house that is attractive, welcoming, inviting, interesting and colorful, without going over the top, will make a prospective buyer fall in love with you. Curb appeal is all about imagination and letting the artist or home decorator inside of you come out. However, you should be aware that if you have very peculiar personal tastes, they will not necessarily go over well with others. You have to choose things which will appeal to the general public, not just to you.

Therefore, while you should repair and paint cracked, peeled or faded door frames, you should not paint them in colors so bold and garish that they will be considered tasteless. Use contrasting tones that accentuate the exterior paint. You do want to create a focal point on the door frames if you have great windows. But the point is to make the windows stand out rather than having the door frames scream kitschy.

Lawns are immediate turn offs if they are not well-kept and regularly landscaped. You can hire a professional or do it yourself, but the point is to do it on a regular basis. If you have what used to be a great wooden fence around your front yard, then make it great once again. As you did with the door frames, repair and paint cracked, peeled or faded wooden posts. If you need to do so, replace any broken or rotten fence posts or any part of the fence for that matter. And do not forget to put some grease on the hinges so that the gate does not squeak when your prospective buyer opens it.

It is often said, but it cannot be overstated that you should add colorful flowers to your flower bed, walkway and flower pots. They should not be empty because they might send a message that you really do not care what the house looks like. However, tactically planted, well kept and fresh flowers will liven up any front yard, adding to the curb appeal.

The overall idea is for your house to put on its Sunday best, but every day of the week. If you allow your imagination and creativity to come out, you are bound to come up with some wonderful ideas that will separate your house from the rest in the neighborhood. Rather than trying to keep up with the Joneses, the Joneses will end up trying to keep up with you, and that is a welcome change for anyone who is trying to sell a home in today's real estate market.
