Here are random points on how to be assured of kitchen safety:

  1. Always remind your kids not to play in the kitchen and explain to them the importance of behaving within this area.

  2. Make sure all sharp items are properly stored when not in use. It must be kept out from the reach of your kids or they may end up cutting themselves.

  3. If you have machines that have blades like osteorizers, food processors, meat slicers, etc., the blades must be protected and kept to avoid cuts during handling. And turn off the device before even taking out food products created from them.

  4. Be careful in handling electronic devices. Do not overload them in one socket or extension wire. Do not even place them near the sink. And observe how it functions to see whether or not, the device is emitting sparks, burnt smells or causes shocks.

  5. If you need to hang paper towels or clothing materials, please keep them away from the burner or gas range. And do not wear loose clothes if you do not want to catch fire while cooking. Do not even think of putting your cookbooks and recipe cards on top of the unused burners or even close to a flaming burner.

  6. When preparing meals, always wash your hands before and after handling the food. Tie your hair if you must to avoid getting food to it. Follow proper guidelines in handling meat and other food products.

  7. Keep the walls and floor clean. You have to sweep it, mop it and let it dry. Places with moisture can be a good place for bacteria and fungi to grow. Hence, you should be able to lessen the numbers by scrubbing and acid washing (if applicable).

  8. A pot or pan fresh from the oven or the burner is surely hot to handle. If you do not want to get burns, be smart and use potholders. If you are cooking with oil, do not put in the meat or vegetables if the liquid is not properly drained. Do this if you do not want hot oil splattering all over your face.
