Asbestos and lead are things you need to be knowledgeable about when you have plans on buying a historic house. Although they do not really have direct negative effects to the residents but if you ignore them they can get worse. For newly-constructed homes, these may not be present. But if you are living in an older house, you should be aware if you have these components or not.

Asbestos and lead are known to be part of the main components of constructing a house. However, despite their importance to the construction materials, builders are recommended to stay away form them and look for better and safer alternatives. Even if the contractors are aware of these, some of them still stick to using materials that carry these harmful elements. Thus, most old homes use materials with asbestos and lead.

If you are thinking how these two can greatly affect your health, continue reading this entry and you will get the answers to your question.

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that is included in insulation. It is also used to prevent from fire accidents. However, despite its advantage, it is still said to be dangerous to your health. One of the diseases that you can get out of this is the lung cancer.

When fibers found in this substance is disturbed it can spread into the air. This is when the asbestos becomes dangerous since the person can inhale it. But the effects are not easily seen immediately so no need to worry about it. However, according to physicians, it takes some time for these to be visible. Because you can not notice them, you have to seek for medical help.

Alternatively, lead is found in paint. This substance can withstand extreme weather. This is also not affected by heat. Thus, it is considered to be as painting radiators. Up to now, lead-based paints are mostly used by contractors.

However, lead is banned for its harmful effects. It is said to cause cardiovascular illnesses. People have been so worried about this threat especially for kids who have faster metabolism process than the old ones. In fact, this is poisonous.

It is not safe to use lead-based paints. Contractors should be aware of this and not use them. If your builders take this for granted, inform them that you are very particular of the health of your family members. Hence, they should stay away from using harmful materials, and one of these is lead-based paints.

Purchasing old houses is not really that bad after all. You just have to be familiar of the things that you can possibly put your and family in danger. So before signing the contract, make sure to let the house undergo a home inspection process.
