Constructing homes that can be referred to as "green" are homes that, besides being better for the environment, can also distinguish themselves as more comfortable, durable, deliver lower utility costs and reduce risk of indoor air problems. An "Air Conditioning Contractors of America" or ACCA Manual J Residential Load Calculation should be used in every home to optimize building efficiency and comfort. The ACCA Manual D Residential Duct Design should be followed when designing residential systems that include ducts.

It is common for heating and cooling equipment (HVAC) to be oversized, leading to reduced comfort and higher energy use and expense. An overlarge unit uses more energy constantly by kicking on and off and the home's comfort suffers. An undersized unit will not be able to reach and maintain the desired temperature in the home and will also result in lower home heating and cooling comfort.

Improper duct register and transfer grille placement and sizing can also lead to room pressure imbalances, causing certain rooms to never warm or cool equally.

LEED for Homes is the latest comprehensive green building rating system for residential construction. The program was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and leading industry experts to transform homebuilding toward more sustainable practices.

EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) created the EnergyStar Indoor Air Package to help builders meet consumer preferences for homes with improved indoor air quality and energy efficiency.

The recommended, and in many places, require method to properly size HVAC heating and cooling equipment is the Manual J Residential Load Calculation. The ACCA Manual D Residential Duct Design should be followed when designing residential systems with ducts.

The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) Manual J Residential Load Calculation Procedure is the accepted industry standard for the proper sizing and selection of HVAC equipment in residential applications. Manual J outlines the accurate procedure which can be used to determine the heat loss and heat gain for conventional residential structures. Make sure your Load Calculation Reports are based on ACCA's Manual J 8th Edition, inclusive of all four addenda to the 8th edition. WrightSoft Universal 7.0 software is one of the most recognized Load Calculation software programs for EnergyStar, building permit code compliance, LEED Certification, Build Green projects and energy efficient mortgages. Make sure your HVAC installer or Manual J Load Calculation provider is not using a cheap, non-ACCA certified software to produce your residential Manual J report or it could be rejected.

When building or remodeling a Green home, always utilize an ACCA certified Residential Manual J Load Calculation and Manual D Duct Design.
Savoy Engineering Group offers ACCA Certified Manual J Load Calculations and Manual D Duct Design service performed by Masters level engineer utilizing WrightSoft Universal software based on Manual J8.
