The La Zagaleta Golf and Country Club lies in the heart of the Ronda mountain range, close to the famous marina of Puerto Banus, near Marbella in the Costa Del Sol. The estate was once owned by Henry Roussell, the pharmaceutical tycoon who went on to become the Father in Law of the late Cristina Onassis. Adnan Khashoggi, one time richest man in the world bought the estate from Mr. Roussell and used it as his European base, constructing a 5100m2 home. Mr. Khashoggi´s boast, Nabila, was moored in Puerto Banus in the eighties and his helicopter would make regular shuttle runs throughout the day back and forth to his estate.
Mr. Khashoggi ran into problems with accusations of arms dealing and his estate was then acquired by its current owners. They had the vision of turning this development into the most exclusive, private and secure enclave in Europe. The vision then became a reality in 1991 when the estate was marketed in both Switzerland and Germany, making its first few sales in the process.
Fast forward to the present day and now there are approximately 200 homes on the estate, with the possibility of only 400 residences in total. To put this into perspective the development has a size of 900 Hectares and because of its low density build allowance has won the Ford award for the conservation of nature. Much of the natural beauty has been preserved and to complement this there are two world championship golf courses, the most recent of which, Los Barrancos was completed in 2007 at a cost of some €20,000,000.
There are of course many fabulous residences within this estate, all enjoying the highest level of security. There are only two entrances to the development, both of which are manned with armed, highly trained security personnel. In fact the only way you can get into the estate is by the invitation of one of the owners or La Zagaleta themselves. This surely is one of the many attributes that make this estate one of the most exclusive places to live in Europe.
