One of the fastest and easiest ways of improving the external appearance of a home is by installing porch canopies and door porches. Very often it is the external doors which define much of the character of the house, and more than that - it is the doors and entrances which define how a property will be viewed by those who may be considering buying it.

Just as the eyes are focal points when looking at somebody's face, the door of a property tends to be where the eye is drawn, and this is a universal tendency. It is for precisely this reason that having doors and entrances look smart, well maintained and inviting is especially important.

Much effort can be invested in windows, roofs, the walls, the garden, and whilst all this is certainly very beneficial, in terms of sheer cost effectiveness and convenience, porch canopies and door porches win hands down every time.

Having windows replaced with new ones is a time consuming process which will require your home to be open to the elements for at least a day, and more usually several days. Typically it seems that such work is carried out during the coldest spell of weather the area has ever known, with strong winds and a smattering of rain thrown in for good measure.

Painting the entire exterior of a house is time consuming, expensive and back breaking work - quite literally if you happen to be the one up the ladder; if you're not, then the cost increases even more.

The garden may be a hobby for some people, although it's likely that for even the most devoted green fingered enthusiast sorting out the blessed plot is a task likely to take many weeks, and can often be an expensive one.

If you're not such an enthusiast you may wish to either employ someone who is, at notable expense, or just concrete over the whole thing, which is expensive.

In every case, improving the exterior appearance of a property is time consuming and expensive. So to discover that the most crucial part of the process has been overlooked can be a little disheartening.

The good news, however, is that by choosing the right combination of materials and installation methods you can have porch canopies or door porches fitted in time for lunch, at very little cost and virtually no inconvenience.

The door doesn't have to be removed, the walls don't need to be reinforced with 12 foot steel poles, and you don't even need a palladium style porch to support the weight. In fact, glass reinforced polyester porch canopies and door porches weigh so little that they can easily be carried under one arm. And no, we're not just talking about this year's winner of the World's Strongest Man competition either.

Glass reinforced polyester porch canopies are very lightweight, meaning that they can be installed very quickly, usually by a single contractor, and don't require any additional reinforcements as they are self supporting.

But one of the common questions people often ask when hearing the suggestion of glass reinforced polyester is why have a bit of plastic fitted to the outside of the house when you could have a nice looking timber porch canopy or traditional felt roofing?

It's a fair comment, and fortunately there are some extremely good reasons why GRP is a far more suitable solution for porch canopies and door porches in the UK compared to either of the alternative methods.

Timber absorbs moisture - it's a fact, and over time it will swell, warp and split, unless you are supremely diligent in regularly maintaining it and replacing sections when required. Timber is also quite heavy and will need additional reinforcement, which costs more, and takes longer to install.

Felt roofing is the one reason why more and more people each year are turning to GRP, because felt roofing stretches, sags, collects water, makes a fantastic location for moss and mildew to germinate, and eventually splits, tears and allows moisture into your home.

GRP is fully waterproof, won't twist, distort, swell, crack or split, and will not allow moisture to gather, and is exceptionally cruel where homeless moss and mildew spores are concerned. Not only that, but as modern GRP porch canopies and door porches are available in a wide range of styles and designs, including wood effects, the real question is not so much why you'd choose to have GRP porch canopies fitted, but why you wouldn't.
