With Less New Construction, Now is The Time to Renovate

For anyone who has been putting off a home renovation due to the high costs of hiring a reputable contractor and the hassle of trying to get a job done on time, now just might be the ideal time to get those renovations going. New home building has dropped by up to 80% in some areas and with existing home sales struggling to stabilize, many professional home builders and finishers are scrambling to find enough work to keep their companies busy; so it is an ideal time to think about any renovation projects that you may be wanting to complete.

Many home owners are looking to sit tight and wait out the drop in housing prices in their current homes, at least until values increase. To make their homes more comfortable to live in, many home owners are investing wisely in their homes. Instead of large extravagant renovations however, most homeowners are opting for simple fixes, energy efficient improvements, or moderate upgrades that make their homes more comfortable. Some of the more popular projects being taken on currently are repairs, particularly after the horrific winter weather seen over so much of the country, and value added upgrades such as energy efficient features. Green eco-friendly options are almost always a good return on the investment and can help you save money while you live in the home.

Prices of home renovations have dropped by 15% or more as the market has weakened substantially over the last six months. Many home construction companies have spread out into doing renovations as well as building due to the huge slow down in their market, overwhelming the renovation market with far more workers than required to do the few jobs that home owners require. Fortunately for the home owners the current trends have resulted in lower material costs, shorter wait times, and faster project completion than have been seen in years. Many builders have even taken to throwing freebies in to projects as incentive for home owners to hire them.

Many home owners are deciding to make their homes more comfortable to live in while they wait out the recovery of the economy and housing values; but with enough renovations you can make your existing home feel like a brand new one! Don’t forget that just because a contractor is cheap doesn’t mean you’ll get a good deal by hiring them; just like during the boom times, make sure that you ask for references and examples of their work to make sure that you’re hiring a reputable contractor.
