Why is everyone talking about Corian worktops lately? Almost everywhere you turn people are discussing the virtues and benefits of Corian worktops, from new build properties to kitchen redesigns, from restaurants to bars, and even in people's bathrooms! Corian worktops seem to be immensely versatile, but surely that's not the only reason why people are discussing them so much?

In fact, Corian worktops are only one of a number of alternative acrylic worktops, the other popular choices including Staron and HiMac. It is certainly easy to see why solid worktops are preferable to cheaper laminate worktops, and acrylic worktops do seem to have a number of advantages, but time and again the name that people seem to be expounding upon is Corian. So what are the benefits, why would you choose Corian worktops, and how does Corian compare to other solid worktops and acrylic worktops that are currently available?

One of the key words people use in relation to Corian worktops is 'versatility'. Increasingly today versatility is a key factor in redesigning, rebuilding or installing new kitchen designs and new worktops in places ranging from kitchens to bathrooms, from receptions to bars. Corian is a unique material because it can be moulded, cut, glued and even vacuum moulded, meaning that it can be used to create almost any shape, size, design and form that you can imagine.

No longer are you limited by slabs of cheap laminate wood cut into any shape you like as long as it's rectangular. With Corian worktops you can create in three dimensions, including sweeping curves, wavy edges, vertical curves at the back to create all in one splash back areas, and even mould into the surface of the Corian worktop such things as drainage channels, bowls and storage.

In some cases people have even had the sink formed from the same material as the worktop, so it is perfectly possible to have Corian worktops fulfill most of the roles that can be imagined in any kitchen. In bathrooms people have used Corian to create unique bathroom basins with splashback sections and shelves, creating a visually striking, wholly unique and extremely practical solution.

One of the things you'll often notice, or rather not notice, is that Corian worktops never have any seams or joins, This of course is not only an advantage when it comes to health, hygiene and strength, but is also something of an illusion! The material used to join sections of Corian worktops together is the exact same material used to create the worktops and surfaces themselves. This means that the result is seamless, helping to improve the look of a kitchen, bar, reception area of other use for Corian.

So if you're looking for versatility, hygiene, strength, uniqueness and a visual feast for the eyes, Corian worktops already tick all of the boxes. It is certainly easier to see the appeal - but what else is there to be aware of when considering Corian worktops for the home?

One of the major selling points of Corian worktops is durability, because Corian is tough - very tough. Even if you're the most enthusiastic cook in the world, dropping a full casserole dish onto the surface, hacking away at your Sunday roast with a power saw or crushing garlic by hammering it mercilessly with a rolling pin, Corian worktops will ride through the culinary journey unfazed.

However, it is inevitable that eventually you'll manage to find some way of creating a small chip or dent, perhaps by dropping the fridge freezer on the worktop, but the great news is that Corian worktops come with a full decade's worth of cover, and the repair is incredible. To mend a small chip or dent all that is necessary is to inject a small quantity of the exact same composite material from which the worktop is made, and after smoothing this over it sets to create a perfectly seamless and entirely invisible repair which restores your worktop to the same condition it was when new - all in a matter of minutes.

Yet there is still more, because another reason why so many people seem to be so enthusiastic about Corian worktops is the sheer range of colours and styles available. With over 70 different colours, patterns and styles currently available you'd think that was sufficient already, but every year Corian adds to this range with yet more, meaning that for the greatest range of styles and colours, Corian is virtually impossible to beat. Whatever your decor, colour scheme or style, you're certain to find at least one Corian design which seems almost to have been made especially for you.

But what of the alternatives to Corian worktops? Clearly Corian worktops are not the cheapest of solid worktops, but then solid worktops aren't bought because they're cheap, but because they represent astonishing value for money over the long term, they're durable and they inspire confidence, as well as offering a staggering range of styles and possibilities. If you look hard enough you're bound to find alternative acrylic worktops for less than Corian worktops, but be warned - often the lower price means that the inner core is significantly thinner than Corian, which means they are far more likely to be damaged more quickly. After all, you get what you pay for, and with Corian worktops, you get versatility, durability, design and a ten year warranty.
