The La Zagaleta estate has always had wealthy, successful custodians. The development has been in the hands of Henry Roussell, a French pharmaceutical pioneer and also the Saudi magnate Adnan Khashoggi, who was once one of the richest people in the world. The estate is set in the Ronda mountain range and although when you are within its grounds you feel like you are in the middle of the Andalucian countryside, you are still close to Marbella and the prestigious marina of Puerto Banus. Mr Khashoggi used to have his gargantuan boat, Nabila moored in Banus and would regularly take a chopper to and from on a daily basis.
The estate was acquired by its present owners in the late eighties, when Mr. Khashoggi fell foul of the law for arms dealing, a charge he was acquitted of two years later. The owners set about creating a vision that would develop an exclusive enclave that would provide prospective owners a chance to buy a home in a secure, private and unique environment.
Fast foward to the present day and you now have a total of 245 constructed residences, out of a possible 415. There are two world championship golf courses, the latest of which Los Barrancos, completed in 2007 at a cost of €20,000,000 give its owners the ultimate game of golf. Mr.Khashoggis old residence still remains as the La Zagaleta golf course club house, giving its members over 5100m2 of space, housing restaurants, bowling alley and many more luxury facilities.
One of the main factors that can be attributed to the developments success is the extremely low build density permitted within the estate. Taking into account that it covers over 900 Hectares, the number of plots available is very small. Also when prospective purchasers buy a plot, the minimum size is approximately 4000m2, with the possibility to only construct 15% of that for a villa. This ensures that each house has an acceptable distance between neighbours.
Security also plays a big part in La Zagaletas´ success, with only two entrances into the estate, both of which are manned by highly trained, armed guards. You can only gain access into the estate if you have been personally invited by one of the owners or La Zagaleta themselves. There is absolutely no chance of unauthorized people wandering around the estate. Contractors who enter must stay within the sector they are visiting, if they stray from this they will be stopped and questioned by security.
The owners have also put in place aesthetic regulations for any new property built. You can only have two levels from the front of the house, from the side or the back this is not the case any many owners have four levels. You must also have the same style and colour of tiles that all the other properties have, this ensures some level of uniformity and maintains a degree of sympathy to the surroundings.
Overall this estate has so many unique features that nowhere else within Europe can compete at the same level. Because of the planning and concept the present owners had, residents can enjoy a beautiful location, coupled with the absolute highest level of luxury available. The estate will continue to go from strength to strength because of its amazing attention to detail.
