The battle to protect your home from pests and other infestations is as old as the time during which humans have chosen to inhabit in shelters. Human shelters provide pests with warmth in winter, shade in summer, relative safety and an almost endless supply of food.
It is for these reasons and other reasons that insects and other pests choose to make human dwellings their home. However, when pests invade a home, humans become annoyed and they look to get rid of them in any way they can.
And it is not without good reason that human beings look to get rid of insects and pests. Some insects and pests carry illnesses and disease and others can be quite dangerous. The potential for harm is especially great in areas where there are poisonous animals, whereas the worry in other areas is the harm that the pest can cause to the structure of the home.
Termites can wreak havoc on a home to the point of debilitating the very foundation, and this is a constant threat in areas where termites are a problem. Therefore, if you live in an area where there are termites, read about their habits, when they swarm and where they are likely to be found.
If you find even one termite in your home, it is not a coincidence, and one termite is probably a sign that there is a colony somewhere in your home. You must find an exterminator immediately so that the source of the problem can be found and eliminated.
Other pests such as moles, mice, rats and cockroaches require other approaches and different poisons and treatments. Unless you are an expert, you should never attempt to handle poisons, and you should never set traps with poisons if there are children in the house. Once again, call your exterminator and let the expert in these matters handle your problem.
The same advice holds true if you live in an area where there are brown recluse spiders, Africanized honeybees, black widow spiders, scorpions, poisonous snakes or any other type of animal that can cause a potentially deadly sting or bite. You should not try to handle any of these pests on your own unless you are an expert.
Even if you are an expert, you should always have someone with you because accidents can and do happen at any time. In case of an accident handling these potentially dangerous animals, you need to have someone with you who can apply first aid and contact emergency services.
Not all insects are potentially harmful or fatal and some are even beneficial, but it is understandable that you do not want them inside your home. They can be a real nuisance no matter how beneficial they may be.
In any event, before you go and try to get rid of the problem and perhaps make things worse, you should always contact a professional for advice. You should look around for a well-experienced exterminator to get rid of your pests, and you should call animal control if your problem is with a larger and potentially deadly animal.
