Can double glazing ever be stylish and fashionable? There has always been an element of snobbery when it comes to double glazing. People realise that having windows replaced is expensive and that there is nothing more expensive that replacing wooden windows with double glazed wooden windows. However why are UPVC windows seen as being unstylish and not as good as their wooden counterparts? Admittedly if you are in the market for keeping the original features of a property UPVC double glazing is a bit of a no no but it is often done well in other countries so is it just the UK that has a problem with the style of double glazing?

When it comes to style and double glazing it is sometimes said that UPVC windows never have the same effect as original features. In short though it depends on the style of home you have and how much you have to spend.

If you live in a period home or one with an order on it to keep some of the original features much of the time the planners will only allow traditional materials such as timber. However if you live in a home that is not listed or subject to other planning restrictions [such as living in a conservation area] then uPVC [or PVC-U as it is also known] can be a viable low maintenance alternative.

In general UPVC will also be less expensive than wood. However at this point you should note that should you want to replace sash windows not matter what the material is, it will still be a costly procedure. So if you want to take a property back to its original features it could mean ensuring that you have some extra cash for these improvements.

As the popularity of making homes more and more energy efficient increases the need for double glazing is becoming more fashionable. With all style and fashion ideas though there is always a backlash and that is where the double glazing trend loses out. So even though we want to be warm and donít want to kill the planet by leaking lots of heat into the atmosphere fashion is never going to be on the side of the UPVC trend.

Like art, fashion is fickle and so double glazing may have already had its time somewhere in the 70s or 80s and is unlikely to become high fashion again.
