Sprinkler irrigation system is typically used in various residences in order to maintain their lawns. This is the same irrigation used for golf courses, business establishments and other public places. They are very convenient to use when it comes to watering plants and landscapes.

There are various types of sprinklers being offered in the market. They are being categorized as rotor, spray heads ad drip irrigation.

Rotor Sprinklers work by spraying water in a rotating manner. The head rotates to cover as much as 0.6 to .8 inches per hour. This is best used to water big lawns. The good thing about this is it has the ability to hydrate the soil evenly.

Stream: It can either be single, multi or impact.

Spray heads are stationary. They just stand on the ground. Sometimes, they pop out when needed. They work by spraying water in circles. According to sources, it can spray water in as much as 1.7 inches every hour.

Stream: round type which may take the shape of a full, semi or quarter circle.

Drip Irrigation is commonly used for spaced beds and certain kind of plants like grapes and other vines. Water is being distributed through trickles and it is directed towards the root zone. It can deliver water of as much as 24 gallons per hour.

Stream: drop by drop, trickle.

There are other types of irrigation systems. The other types are commonly used in agricultural lands, which mean they can cover vast areas. Examples of it are:

Surface Irrigation: Water is being spread throughout the field. It flows normally basically to wet the land. It is similar to flooding but water flow is controlled. You can see this type of irrigation in rice fields.

Center Pivot Irrigation: This works like a sprinkler but it uses several pipes mounted on tower. This also distributes water in a circular form and pivots for as much as 500m radius.

Another type of irrigation is watering of plants manually with the use of watering cans. Some people still makes use of this method especially when they have few plants at home (especially the indoor potted plants).

Other Facts about Irrigation Systems

Most of the modern irrigation systems are very beneficial to people. A person can save much time and water if the system is properly installed.

However, one still has to perform maintenance on this system so that the device can function optimally. Leaks for one are the common problem. Therefore, one should take time to check the pipes for leaks to avoid water wastage.

As for sprinkler systems, one needs to ensure that there are no shrubs or weeds blocking it. Once they grow, all of it should be removed right away.

It is also best to use automated sprinklers with timers. This way, the sprinkler could work on its own without you having to control it most of the time. But make sure you time your sprinklers properly. You want to avoid watering plants at the hottest hours of the day. This could result to evaporation of water that could deprive the plant of its water needs.

Another thing to look into is the type of soil and the kind of weather you have. The kind of sprinkler or irrigation system to be installed would highly depend on these factors.
