There are many varieties under this group as well, and each can serve many purposes too. The conifers for one can be diversely decorative because of its different foliage colors and forms such as weeping, prostrate or topiary. Some shrubs especially the native ones are known to be resistant against pest insects and diseases. Most shrubs have the same maintenance needs such as regular pruning and watering. But this group has more variants that can survive with less water like olive, butterfly bush, potentilla and barberry.

Generally, prices of plants and shrubs can be as varied as their species. Some variants are pricey upon the initial purchase of their seedlings, but their long-term maintenance needs are relatively cheaper, and the exact opposite conditions apply to other plants and shrubs.

Selection process

The key to having a successful garden is to know the type of soil in your area. Check its levels of moisture, nutritional content and erosion. Another crucial pointer is to note the temperature conditions in your locality. Some plants need special attention with regards to their adaptability to the wet or dry seasons.

Lastly, inquire if there are planting regulations in your community. There are some locations that extremely encourage home owners to grow native plants only. Varied reasons for this rule include further advancement of local vegetation, protection of wildlife, special soil conditions in the area and others.
