Corian worktops are without doubt the hottest thing in the world of fitted kitchens today. Solid worktops have gained huge popularity as many more people are using their kitchens for more than just storing the can opener and the microwave.

Kitchens and home cooking have enjoyed a massive resurgence in popularity, and cheap worktops with veneers which flake and peel are simply not cutting the mustard any longer.

What's needed is durability and strength, and solid worktops certainly live up to their reputation. But of all of the solid worktops available, including granite, quartz and stainless steel, the one that's really getting the attention of householders, kitchen designers and new-build developers are Corian worktops.

Corian worktops are different from any other kind of solid worktop, and it's really difficult to try to compare it to other solid surfaces or kitchen worktops, because it has invented its own set of standards as far as providing a worktop for the working kitchen is concerned.

Let's face it, kitchens are tough environments, from scalding liquids to heavy pans, from acidic substances to razor sharp knives, the average kitchen is more like a warzone - and a tough warzone at that.

It's no wonder that the preference in the past for pretty but fairly ineffective cheap worktops has all but passed into history, and that today people realise that investing just a little more in a solid kitchen worktop is far better in the long run.

You have the confidence to enjoy your kitchen, to get to work rustling up a new recipe you've seen on television, or hacking through a Sunday joint with great gusto, and all the while not having to worry about scratching your kitchen work surface or carving the veneer up into slices which then inadvertently end up on Aunt Mavis' dinner plate along with her Yorkshire pud.

So it is perfectly understandable why solid worktops have gained such popularity, but what is it about Corian worktops in particular which has gained so much interest and enthusiasm? In order to answer the question there are probably at least three ways of seeing the advantages and benefits of Corian - versatility, durability and style. Let's look at each area in turn and find out what all the fuss is about.

Versatility is a word you'll often hear when describing Corian kitchen worktops, because the material itself used in their construction allows you to have virtual free reign over the design of your worktop or surface.

Corian can be cut, glued, moulded, vacuum formed and shaped using virtually any manufacturing process you care to image. Apart from, perhaps, welding.

Corian can be used to fashion solid worktops which defy normal tradition, and which venture bravely into the third dimension. No longer forced to endure the bland dullness of flat worktops, Corian worktops provide you with the opportunity to be rather more creative, such as having the back edge of your work surface curve upwards, providing a splashback, or perhaps part of the work surface could be ridged, providing you with a built in cooling rack.

You could even have mixing bowls moulded into the surface of the worktop itself, and in some cases people have extended the idea still further by having the sink formed as part of the kitchen worktop. From sweeping curves to added functionality and convenience, what Corian worktops can't do is rarely worth doing in a kitchen anyway.

Durability is another keyword when considering Corian worktops, because as well as being unusually versatile, they are tougher than a marine wearing a concrete jacket. With Corian worktops you don't need to worry about dents, scratches or chips. There's no veneer here - they're solid through to the core, and even if you do manage to invent a way of creating a small pit, chip or crack, their ten year warranty will still apply, and repairing them couldn't be simpler.

The same material from which the Corian worktop was made can be injected into the crack, and when it dries the repair is invisible, and you have your worktop back to its brand new, pristine condition once again.

Finally, a quick word about style, because if you are very particular about colours, themes, styles and looks when it comes to interior design and decorating, you'll love Corian worktops. Already available in over 60 different colours, styles and designs, and with several new colours and options introduced every single year, Corian worktops offer one of the widest range of choices available. As far as solid worktops are concerned, Corian worktops are a tasty recipe for kitchen success.
