Flooding, next to fire is one of the worst cases that can happen to your home. It destroys not just the things you have worked hard for but also the structure of your home. It is important to ensure that your home is protected from flooding through several preventive measures.

Here are some ways to prevent flood and water from damaging your home:

  1. Understand where and what ways your home is more prone to flooding. Regular check up and proper maintenance are two major tools in preventing flood and water damage.

  2. Check the drainage outside your home and ensure that water does not soak through the soil. If your home is in an area where rain and melted snow runs towards the house this can cause a major problem. You can avoid this by using enough drainage system that allows snow and rain flow away from the home.

  3. Use waterproof sealants on the foundation to protect against floods. Rubberized sealants helps channel away water the foundation to the drain tile lining the perimeter of your home.

  4. Flooding caused by burst pipes is common and this is due to freezing. Make sure that the pipes are protected from freezing through proper winter maintenance. Clay pipes are more prone to floods than PVC. Very affordable valves like backwater valves may be installed to avoid sewer backups.

  5. Overflowing sinks and bathtubs also cause water damage. Do not leave a room while there is running water and turn off taps if you must leave a room. An overflowing toilet is harder to avoid. Store a plunger in the bathroom, avoid flushing paper towels, feminine hygiene products, and cat litter.

  6. Make channels and flood pipes around your home that purposefully draws floodwater to the less used area in your home. Use pipes that lead water to flow on the garage or the flood compartment below your home.

  7. Make sure to have enough foliage in your home and many plants to avoid soil erosion. Erosions contribute to degradation of the residues around your home and can cause flooding.

  8. Check out your drains for cracks and clogs. If you are in a flood prone area, use support floodwalls to block water from getting in. The electric panel, furnace and water heater should be raised above. Musty-smelling homes are indications of moisture problems.

  9. Use ceramic tiles and ground floor instead of carpets and lime plaster on walls, raise electric sockets one and a half meter above ground level and replace wooden window frames and doors with fabricated UPVC, which is easy to clean.

  10. When raising your home and the foundation base above flood level can be quite expensive but is the most effective way to protect your home from flooding especially if you are in a flood prone area.

You can do permanent alterations to protect your home from water damage and flooding. Find changes that you need to make and consult a professional before you proceed in your changes.
