The garage is among the spare areas of the house. Most of us use it as a storage room. But the garage can be so much more. We can even transform it into a living space. The garage is often a great place for a home office. It is spacious enough and it provides exclusivity. However, the transformation is not an easy process especially if you have used it to store your old stuff for a long time.

To help you manage, follow these steps:

  1. Allocate a budget. The budget influences everything in your project. This is why you have to make sure that you include all the necessary materials. If you will purchase new furniture, include them as well. If permits are needed, you have to prepare for the fees you will pay for it. If you need to hire more help for the project, include labor. You do not have to spend a lot for this project. You can save more by asking friends to help and by using the furniture that you already have.

  2. Prepare a plan. A plan is very important because this is also required if ever you need to get a permit for this project. You can consult a professional designer for this. There are also designs available online. You can even find guide to design your own room or office. When planning, see to it that you stick with your budget. There are inexpensive ways to deign your new living space or office. Instead of purchasing new items, you can look around your home or check your old stuff. You can update old items through painting and staining.

  3. Apply for the needed permits. Not all improvements need permit. If you are just going to paint the wall and add a few furniture, you will less likely need one. However, you might need it if you will install electrical lines. If you are uncertain if you need to apply for a permit, consult your local building department personally. If you have a contractor, he will apply for this for you. But make sure that you ask the authorities even if your contractor says that you do not need one, to be sure.

  4. Prepare the garage. Once everything is ready, empty the garage and clean it. You need to empty it so that you can move freely and make the necessary changes. While you remove the items, sort them at the same time. Segregate what you are disposing from those items that you are keeping.

  5. Carry out your plan. You can easily do this once the garage is ready. If you have a clear plan and the help needed, you will be able to complete the entire project with ease. Give clear instructions to friends that will be helping to avoid problems.

Garage has many uses. But instead of making it your storage room, why not convert it to a livable space. You can transform it to a home office or a play room for the kids. Just make sure that you have the right budget and plan for it.
