Our roof ultimately protects us from the different elements from the environment including rain, wind and other debris. However, it will not be able to protect us effectively if our roof is damaged. This is why we need to check it regularly. Many think that they do not need to inspect their roof because it is new. However, roofs can be damaged even if it is newly installed.

There are different ways to ensure that our roof is in good shape. You can check it once a year and every after a heavy rain. You may also take the following steps:

Check the roof:

As mentioned earlier, you have to check your roof at least once a year. This is important so that you will be able to detect problems before they get worse. Check the roof even if you do not expect to see damages. Bear in mind that small holes will not affect your roof unless it rains. Additionally, check your roof when the weather is calm. This will allow you to see the different areas of your roof clearly. It is safer too.

Trace the leaks:

Often, we do not know that there are leaks unless we check the attic. The dark spots on the attic signifies leaking. If the markings are damp, then the leak is new. Usually, this is caused by protruding nails. There are also times when these are caused by cracks and holes. Trace where the leaks are from. You can mark them and trace them on top of the roof.

Repair damages right away:

Once you find damages on the roof, deal with them right away. There are products that can be readily used to seal the leaks. If you find damaged or lose shingles, repair them immediately. Usually they are easy to replace. However, if you do not know how, let the professional handle them. You might cause more damage to your roof if you try to repair it yourself.

Clean the roof:

Remove leaves and other debris from the roof. Clean your roof regularly as well and help increase its life. Always include the gutter. If you find it difficult to clean the gutter, install a gutter protector to keep debris of. Before you clean your roof, see to it that you take safety precautions. You need to have a harness. Wear a non-slip pair of shoes as well.

Do not ignore streaks:

If you notice discoloration or streaks on your roof, have it checked right away because these are implications of development of unwanted organisms like algae and molds. This usually takes place when your roof is moist or if it stays damp for a long time. High humidity also causes this.
To prevent this, cut the branches that are touching your roof. You should not let the branches grow too near to the roof because it will block the sun from drying your roof. Extra precaution should be taken if your roof is facing north. Check it often to make sure that it is dry.
