Over the couple of years, two things have become extremely important and they are saving money and saving the environment. With the utility bills hitting sky high, there are numerous ways you can do to minimize your expenses.

The tips below will cost little or no money at all and have an immediate effect in lowering your energy use and your utility bills as well. This will not only help you save money but also helps in minimizing your carbon footprint.

  1. Switch off or disconnect all electronics that are not used. You can also use an energy saving power strip that you can easily switch on and off, as you like. Unused appliances and electronics that are plugged in even when unused consume twenty percent of electricity bill because it still draws power even when they are not in use.

  2. You should seal off drafts in your home and trim the windows to prevent heat from coming out of your home. Caulking helps save nasty drafts. Ensure that the weather strip is connected to the exterior to seal off leaks on doors and make sure that the door sweep is in contact with the threshold because doors have the tendency to snag over time and this is a big issue that contributes in energy waste and high electricity consumption.

  3. Consider changing your old wooden windows to vinyl retrofit ones. They are one of the best things around and because they are thermally broken, they allow the elements to remain outside.

  4. Choose energy star appliances for your kitchen and these appliances will consume energy and are definitely pro nature.

  5. Do a regular clean up and maintenance of your appliances. Appliances that are in good condition and in good working order runs more effectively. Change your furnace filter and vacuum the coils of your refrigerator regularly.

  6. For your cooling and heating system to work most efficiently, ensure that there is no blockage in the vent to allow air to flow freely. Walk through your home and check that there is no curtain or couch blocking the vent.

  7. Switch your old incandescent lights to CFL or LED lights. They are more energy efficient and last longer. These bulbs also emit less heat so you will be able to save on your cooling costs in summer. While they cost more up front, you will be able to realize your savings in time and you will end up saving money by lowering your energy consumption.

  8. Use a programmable thermostat that allows you to adjust the air conditioning and heating temperature at specific hours of the day. For example, you can have your house heated at a comfortable temperature in winter when you are around your home and you can opt to lower the thermostat when you are outdoors. Before buying a programmable thermostat, make sure that it is attuned to your current heating and air conditioning system.

By following these eight tips, you will definitely notice a remarkable reduction on your monthly bills and the amount of energy you consume every month. Not only will you be able to enjoy great savings but also do your share in nature preservation.
