Large Scale Impact In Small Spaces

Make the most of every furnishing: Because a small space has fewer pieces, each furnishing draws some attention. That is why it is important to give thought to each item you place in the space. Make sure an item is there for a reason and attend to the detail of each piece. The best impact you can create is a small room that is pulled together and makes sense.

Include a few large pieces: Rather than having several small pieces of furniture in a small space, make a bigger impact with a few large pieces. Look out for multi-functional items, and make sure the main furnishings are in proportion to each other.

Accessorize with a mirror: A large mirror is a great accent for a small space. Not only is it both decorative and functional, but it also reflects light around the room and opens up the space. A bonus advantage to having a mirror is if it can be placed such that it reflects beautiful things, such as a fine wall art or a lovely view out the window.

Keep patterns simple and vary texture: Fabrics in the room make a better impact if the patterns are not loud and competing. Solid colors and streamlined patterns work best in a small room, especially for the larger soft furnishings. For example, keep the duvet cover in the bedroom a solid light shade. To add interest, use different textures in the room; for instance, in a bedroom you can have a cotton sateen duvet, silk pillows, velvet throw, and faux fur rug.

Balance lines and curves: Horizontal stripes on a rug and vertical stripes on a window treatment can make a large impact by visually widening and elongating the space, respectively. Curves, on the other hand, soften sharp features and strike a nice balance with the lines in the room. Try adding a round table or a chair with a curved back. Differently shaped throw pillows also work for creating a high-impact space.

Use light: Lighting is one of the most important elements you can use to design a dramatic space. In a small room, free up floor space and table surfaces by installing wall sconces or light fixtures with adjustable arms that allow you to flexibly direct light. Clear the ceiling by hiding ambient lighting in recessed halogen lights. Installing recessed lighting near the walls has the effect of enlarging the space.

Stay with similar colors: Donít be afraid to use bright or bold colors, whatever your style, but try not to have contrasting colors in your palette. For instance, if you love blue, use different shades of it in the room, and avoid highly contrasting shades like black and white.
