I need plans to build my own shed! A lot of people say this to themselves but are not sure what they need to do in order to get going down the road to owning and building a backyard shed. If you are one of those people keep reading because i will give you a quick look at some important things you need to consider when planning your backyard storage shed project.

The very first thing you need to do is to check with your local government and check on any codes or restrictions that you will be facing when adding a backyard shed. Many cities and towns will require certain set backs from your property lines or from your main dwelling.

You may also need to secure a building permit before you start construction. Not checking the local ordinances can cost you a lot of money if the city finds out you did your project against code so do it right and avoid the hassle!

The next step is to figure out where exactly you want the shed to be located. When choosing your location make sure that you leave proper access for maintenance work. Nothing is worse then having one side hard to get to when you need to repair or do some other work on the structure.

Once the building codes and location are out of the way you want to know how big you want to make it! There are many ways to do this but one of the best ways is to group all of your big equipment like lawnmowers, snow blowers, ETC and place them in an organized square. Then measure the length and width of this group. Check some free shed Plans to see some popular sizes!

This will give you a rough idea of the minimum size you need and you can adjust from there. Skipping this step could leave you with a tiny shed so really take your time on the sizing!

Then all you need to do is make up your mind about special features and additions like windows, double doors and other simple additions that can make your backyard shed project more enjoyable and the finished product more customized!

One popular addition to keep in mind is to add a loft with a pull down ladder for over easy overhead storage. If you are unsure about features or how to plan your shed build out then you will want to choose from some easy to build backyard sheds!
