A homeowner should be responsible for the many things in his or her home. You will be able to live comfortably in your home if everything is in good working order. While there are several things you can do on your own, there are things that should be referred to professionals.

This means that you have to pay someone to do the job for you and this does not come cheap. Thus, it is helpful that you have some knowledge on how to fix several problems yourself.

The most common home systems that often meet problems are the plumbing such as drainage concerns and clogging. You can find several online tutorials and DIY guides to help you.

Replacing pipes or water heating system is not always an easy task. There are complex procedures that require a permit, especially if they are going to alter the major plumbing system of your home. You can perform easy plumbing concerns on your own with proper research and using the necessary tools.

Following are several items that you can do on your own:

  1. To begin with, you must have screwdriver, tape measure, flat metal file, water-pump pliers, bicycle or rubber tube patch, hose clamp and epoxy among others.

  2. Use bucket, closet auger, flange plunger and rags in unclogging a toilet. Pour water if there is no water in the bowl and remove plunger to drain the toilet. Repeat if drain is very slow or does not drain at all. If plunging does not work, shove an auger to the drain system. Turn the crank clockwise and begin pushing. Keep on turning and if it catches an object, you can pull out the cable until the object is retrieved.

  3. Use a couple of adjustable wrenches, screwdriver, spud wrench, helper, brush, small wire, flush valve gasket, fill valve, spud washer, white vinegar and plumber’s putty to repair a leaking tank. Turn off the water on the water supply valve. Disconnect the water supply and flush the toilet. Dry the water tank until dry and remove the fill valve with the use of the two adjustable wrenches and to remove old fill gasket. Install new fill gasket, and valve and turn on the supply line to check for any leaks. Remove tank bolts, gasket and nut then clean them using white vinegar and a small wire brush. Put a new washer on the valve and lower the bank base through the holes. Reinstall nuts, tank bolts, gaskets, and the fill value, supply tube, turn the supply of water on, and check out for any leaks.

  4. Unclog waste lines and drains with the use of water-pump pliers, drains and a hand auger. Disconnect drain trap and place a bucket beneath for wastewater. Loosen slip nut couplings using water-pump pliers. Feed six inches of the hand auger towards the drainpipe and turn it clockwise. Maintain six inches of exposed cable, turning it clockwise, continue pushing, and slowly pull out the cable.

  5. In cleaning a sink sprayer, faucet aerator or showerhead, you must have small wire brush, water-pump pliers, small bowl, paper clip, masking tape, lime-dissolving solution and white vinegar solution. Remove the internal aerator parts using your fingers to push them. Pre-soak them in vinegar solution if they are stuck. Use tweezers to remove the parts, check out for damage and soak overnight using a vinegar solution for reusable parts. Reassemble the aerator and screw back. Check for leaks and tighten if necessary.
