You may have noticed that your basement has a really musty smell. But, you may also know that other basements you have been in do not have the smell that you find in your basement. Therefore, you may be really motivated to find a way to get rid of that odor. You are in luck because it can be done. You just need to try following a few of these simple steps below.

  1. Start by cleaning the basement really well. You will want to get rid of things that you do not need or had not used in two years. You may even want to remove all old boxes and replace them with plastic totes.

  2. Search the entire basement for moisture. You want to be sure that you do not have any leaks around the windows, or walls or the edges of the flooring. If you find any, you need to get it fixed and repaired immediately. This will also help decrease the likelihood of developing mold that can add to the smell as well.

  3. Run a dehumidifier. This is a great way to decrease any moisture that you may have in your home or basement. Again, it will help you to get rid of the musty smell as well as decreasing the likelihood of the chance of mold growing and forming.

These simple tips and steps may take some of your time. You just need to continue searching for leaks and you need to keep everything cleaned up to make sure that the order does not show up in your basement again. You will find that the more you do the better off you will be in the end. Just remain patient and keep your basement neat and dry. Having a nice smelling basement will be worth all the work.
