This is attainable when you have a compost pile. You may be wondering what a compost pile is and how it can help clean the environment. You may be thinking that having a compost pile can be complicated including the steps involved in maintaining it but everyone can actually have a compost pile in the backyard.

What is a compost pile?

If you have plants at home, you have surely seen the falling leaves. People used to burn the leaves in the past to minimize the dirt in their surroundings. However, people have been made aware of its negative effects to the environment which is why they have chosen to have a compost pile. A compost pile is a process of managing dirt such as leaves, grass cuttings, leftovers and fruit peels. If you manage these decomposable wastes properly, the dirt will decompose quickly.

Importance of a compost pile:

Having a compost pile is a very effective way of keeping the environment clean. The quality of the soil will also be improved if you have a compost pile. It also has benefits to plants as they will surely grow better if you have good quality of soil. It can also help the soil recover from damages caused by toxins and prevent further problems from occurring.

How to start your own compost pile?

Before you start a compost pile, check your local community first if they have implemented some rules and regulations on composting. You have to adhere to these rules if there’s any. You should first consider the location where you are going to have a compost pile. The two qualities that you have to look for in a location are having a good drainage and the leveled area. The area should not be hit directly by the rays of the sun and the direction of the wind should not be toward the area where your compost pile is located.

Make sure that the location is accessible to you so you can check it on a regular basis. Your neighbors should also be taken into consideration. So as not to grab the attention of your neighbor, you can cover the compost pile or camouflage it.

Compost pile maintenance:

You should check the material that you are adding to your compost pile. Make sure that they are biodegradable and can decompose quickly. Some examples of biodegradable materials include leaves, fruit peels, leftovers and grass cuttings. Since food leftovers have unpleasant odor, make sure that you put leaves and grass cuttings. To hasten the decomposition process, it will be of great help if you add some water but see to it that you are not flooding it. You should also turn the materials once a week for the air to circulate.

Having a compost pile is one of the effective ways in keeping the environment clean. There are things though that you have to consider before you start a compost pile. One of which is checking your local community. Choose the right location and make sure that you are maintaining it.
