The basement is often made as an extra space for the house. Many use it as storage while others transform it as a wine cellar. Many also use it as an extra bedroom, while others use it as a home office. However, before you decide how to use your basement make sure that you apply the right finishing touches. Here are some tips.

Planning

Just like any project, the basement finish should be carefully planned as well. You need to have the right amount of budget for the changes you will make. If you plan to do it yourself, you need to prepare all the necessary tools and materials. You also need to come up with a good design suitable for the space available. Consider what you want the space to be as well. Take note of what needs to be done. You might need to acquire permits for the changes in your electrical system.

You might also want to hire a contractor. This is a great idea especially if you do not know anything about it. Having contractors will make it easier for you because they will handle everything including the acquisition of a permit in case it is needed. However, you have to be careful in hiring a contractor. See to it that he is reputable and reliable. There are a lot of scams out there.

Doing it yourself

If you think that you can handle it, then start clearing your basement. Remove any items you might have stored there to make it easier for you to move around and to carry out your plan. After clearing the area, you can now work on the floor and wall. Make sure that they are protected from moisture. You can do this by checking the direction of the water when rain pours. Water should drain away from the foundation and basement.

It is also ideal that you install a subfloor. Although this is not necessary, it is recommended because the floor can be very cold. You can use various materials for the subfloor. Choose materials that are more comfortable to you.

It is also essential that you improve the insulation in the basement. This will reduce the heat in the basement during the summer and will help trap the cool air inside during the winter. In addition to that, pay attention to the other details of the property. Check the plumbing and electrical installation as well. You might also need other installation depending on the needs of the basement.

After taking care of the details, work on the bigger features. You will need to paint the walls and install carpets and other items. You might want to frame the walls, the windows and the ceiling. Aside from the walls, you will also need to pain the ceiling.

Add the furniture needed for the basement. If you want this to be your home office, you need tables and chairs, shelves and other storage. You will also need to have different devices like the computer, telephone lines and fax machines.

To avoid problems with finishing your basement, see to it that you plan it carefully.
