There is a famous saying which stipulates that the kitchen is the heart of the home. It is easy to make this assumption because this is where all food is made, and naturally people need food to survive. But there is more to it than that. The kitchen is the room which brings members of the family together, it is an informal meeting place of course, and places where memories are made. Children will remember their mother preparing family meals in the kitchen in the evenings, busy families bustle around the kitchen in the mornings, trying to get breakfast in before they have to rush off. The kitchen will always be the room in the house that emanates good smells and warmth, and should reflect its importance in the family.

All too often you will find that peoples' kitchens start to get shabbier as the years go on. The paint on the walls start to peel and perhaps a cupboard door will fall off here or there. The linoleum on the floors starts to crack and the kitchen can become a desolate place. It is vitally important that this does not happen! If you are going to be spending a good deal of time in your kitchen, then you need to make it beautiful - somewhere that you enjoy spending your time.

First things first, you need to make sure that your kitchen exudes airiness, brightness and space. The colours of your kitchen walls should always be light, with light windows or blinds that are almost always open, to allow fresh air and the sunlight in. Furthermore, you must have good, clean tiles on the floors. If you are remodeling your kitchen, always choose to go with tiles or marble for the floors. These surfaces are much easier to clean, as kitchen floors tend to get quite dirty.

Having an island built into the middle of your kitchen is always a great idea. This opens up so much more work space for cooking in the kitchen, and even socializing. An island in the middle of your kitchen will supply you with a little breakfast nook, where members of the family can eat breakfast together before going their separate ways. This also creates a more socially familial feel in the kitchen, which is sort of what it is all about!

Do not be afraid to be bold and daring in your design choices, whilst still maintaining practicality and functionality. Remember that you are going to spend many years in your kitchen, and the more it reflects your true personality, the more you will enjoy being in there. There are many affordable design options for your kitchen, and easy ways of sprucing it up to make it the kind of room you can enjoy cooking in for many more years to come. Simple adding a new coat of paint or a new set of kitchen cupboards or countertops will transform the room immensely.
