Insulation your garage is very important. As one of the unconditioned spaces in your home, heat can dissipate from your living space to the garage. This is expected to happen since heat's natural behavior is to normally move from a hot place to a cooler one. This is mostly true during winter. And in summer, heat from outside the house can move towards the house. These situations is what you want to avoid because it could lead to energy wastage and high utility bills.

You also have to insulate the garage for a noise reduction purposes. Your garage is the main area where sawing, welding and drilling could take place. If you want to avoid being disturbed by these sounds, the next best thing to do is to insulate the house to prevent noise transmission.

How do you insulate the garage? If you want to make this happen, here are your considerations:

  • The space: Evaluate the areas of the garage that needs to be insulated. Check out areas like the ceiling, walls, doors, windows, crawl spaces and attic.

  • Know what materials are needed for insulation. Determine what's best for a particular area. The right material would be effective in limiting movement of air.

  • Choose insulation materials with the best R-value. Energy star has recommended levels of insulation for a particular region. Different regions have different climates. Therefore, the right R-value ranges could be lower or higher for a particular place.

  • When you buy the insulation material, it is important that you check the product label. This is where you will know about the R-value of the material.

You have the option to install the insulation yourself or the handyman. However, if you plan to DIY the installation, here are some of the things you have to keep in mind:

  • Always wear protective clothing when you install the insulation. It is important to do this because some of the materials can become an irritant to the skin. Therefore, upon installation wear gloves, apron, masks and other protective barriers.

  • Avoid installing insulation materials on areas that emit heat. Doing so could trap the heat coming out of the pipes and other parts of the house and could lead to fire. Be sure to apply insulation materials to the right places.

Do not wait for the last minute to insulate your garage. If this part of the room is an addition, always include this in the construction plan. This is also the same thing that you need to consider if your house is newly constructed.

These are just some of the ideas on how to install insulation in your garage. If you cannot handle the installation on your own, it is best that you call your local contractor to do this for you. Once you are able to pull off the installation process, you will reap its benefits. So before you opt for DIY, consider your skills and knowledge. If you are not comfortable doing it on your own, it is best that you get someone who can do it the right way.
