Your little ones will spend a great deal of time on the floor starting from the time that they learn to crawl. From toddler years through pre-teens and beyond, kids love to sit on the floor to play, read, watch TV, talk on the phone and visit with friends. It is important, then, to have flooring surfaces that are comfortable and warm, as well as forgiving, for those times when young children take a tumble.

Area Rugs
Area rugs are a quick, easy and fairly affordable way to add cushioning to hard floor surfaces. When choosing a rug, your main concerns will be the size and shape of the rug and how it will fit in the space; the thickness, pile and cushioning of the rug; how easy it is to clean; and whether it has been treated with chemicals. Especially with young children, a natural fiber rug without any chemical treatments should be a high priority. Toys, dolls and game pieces that are played with on the rug will likely end up in a young childís mouth at some point, and chemicals could be transferred from the rug to the toys to the childís mouth. Wherever area rugs are used, it is also important to use of a non-slip liner under the area rug so that it wonít slide and cause a child or an adult to take a nasty fall.

Foam Squares
Foam squares can be found at most toy, baby and flooring stores and they are a great way to add softness and cushioning on top of a hard floor. The 4x4 foot squares are designed to be interlocked and they are easy to wipe down and keep clean. They are also a good choice for children that have severe allergies, since they donít trap dust or allergens. Foam squares are ideal for playrooms or a childís bedroom, but their bold primary colors or baby pastel motifs make them hard to use in other family spaces.

Wall-to-Wall Carpeting
Wall-to-wall carpeting is an excellent choice when it comes to kid-friendly flooring. Itís well cushioned and looks stylish too, so itís great for living rooms or family rooms where adults and kids share the space. Carpet is rather affordable as well, especially if you take advantage of sales and free installation offers.

However, there are a couple of potential problems with wall-to-wall carpeting. Some children with allergies cannot tolerate carpeting because it is a magnet for dust mites and allergens. In households where allergies are not a severe problem, frequent vacuuming with a high-quality HEPA vacuum cleaner will help reduce allergens, dust and mites. Itís also advisable to have your carpet steam cleaned at least twice a year. The other problem is the potential for spills to permanently stain the carpet. Choose a carpet in a deep neutral color to reduce the visibility of stains and treat stains immediately. You may also want to invest in your own steam cleaner so that you can spot clean the carpet as often as needed.
