Caring for infants and little children can be quite a chore because you have to watch the child’s every move. No home is safe when there is a child around. There are children under the age of five who were harmed in their very own homes throughout the world.

These accidents usually happen when the adult supervising the child is preoccupied, doing something else or unable to give proper supervision. Remember that injuries in kids often occur very quickly and at the most unexpected situations.

Hence, it is very important to take all measures to protect your child from the common home dangers before bringing the new baby home from the hospital. Make sure to review the safety measures every six months to ensure that your child has not outsmarted or outgrown them.

Tips to childproof your home:

  1. Install window guards, stops and safety nets to prevent kids falling out of windows. Make sure that an adult or an older child can easily remove the safety devices to serve as exits in emergency cases.

  2. Remove any window blind cords that have loops to avoid strangulation and buy safety tassels in place of the cord loops.

  3. Prevent electrocution by installing outlet covers and plates. Remember that children will poke on anything that interests them.

  4. Keep children from dangerous rooms like the kitchen, garage, office and bathrooms. Use door locks and knob covers and put a hook-and-eye latch or slide lock beyond children’s reach.

  5. Always unplug unused appliances, most especially the oven toaster. Make sure that the electrical cords are always coiled and out of kids’ reach all the time.

  6. Install smoke detectors in the floors of the bedrooms in the house and in the kitchen.

  7. Put safety gates on top of stairs to prevent children from falling down stairs and install one in the kitchen to keep the child away from the area when you are not around.

  8. Install safety latches or locks on cupboards, airtight containers, chests, coolers and the fridge to avoid a child being trapped inside and suffocate.

  9. Make sure to set the water heater in the bathroom to 120 degrees to avoid scalding and install anti-scalding devices on the faucets and showerheads.

  10. Store detergents, soaps, alcohol and other perilous items out of their reach.

  11. Put a rubber guard on the bathtub faucet and nonslip stickers in the bathtub to prevent injury. Install a non-skid bath mat to prevent slipping.

  12. Keep medications, toiletries and cleaning supplies beyond children’s reach and install safety locks on cupboards.

  13. The crib, playpen and other baby furniture should not be placed near heater vents, windows, sharp objects, wall hangings and dangling cords.

  14. Put bumpers to every sharp corner around the home and on the edges of furniture. Make sure to remove all glasstop tables.

  15. Remove cluttered toys near the stairs to prevent tripping.

  16. Only use crib mattress that fits firmly and snugly on the crib and avoid putting stuffed toys, comforters, blankets and pillows on it.

  17. Make sure that the baby’s crib has slats of not more than 2-3/8 inches apart and posts in the corner should be short, at least 1/16 inch/2mm. The decorative cut-out should be smaller than the baby’s head.

  18. Remember that children could drown in just two inches deep water, thus you should keep them away from ponds, wells, kiddie pools, deep puddles and even a pail with water.

  19. Inspect children’s toys for any detachable and small parts. Discard broken or dangerous toys or toys that are heavy enough to injure your child.
