If you are choosing furniture for your family room, or are considering reupholstering some of your existing furniture, educating yourself about fabrics can help you make a good choice. Because a family room is generally a casual room where the family gets together to have fun, you don't want to choose any type of fabric that is going to be difficult to maintain, or that isn't child or pet-friendly.

Easy to Clean
You should choose furniture fabrics for your family room that are durable and easy to clean. Furniture that is in the family room often gets a lot of hard use, so you don't want anything that will snag easily, or that won't wear well. You also want to beware of printed fabrics, and instead choose fabrics where the pattern is woven in, because printed fabrics tend to show wear. If a fabric has a tight weave to it, it is more likely to wear longer. You should also look for a fabric with a high thread count, which will wear better. If you have pets, you want to make sure it is a fabric that isn't easily snagged by their claws. Your furniture will look newer over the long run if you choose a color that doesn’t easily show dirt.

Fade Resistant
You should also take fade resistance into consideration, especially if your furniture will be exposed to a lot of sunlight. If you have a sofa in front of a picture window in your family room, choose a fabric that is sunlight resistant. If you choose a patterned fabric, make sure the size of the pattern is in proportion to not only the piece of furniture itself, but also to the overall room. If a pattern is too large, it will look out of place in the room.

Natural Fabrics
When choosing the actual fabric, there are certain properties about fiber types that make them more or less suitable for family room furniture. If you prefer a natural fiber fabric, you will have many types from which to choose. Cotton is very durable, and doesn't fade easily, but it is susceptible to wrinkling and is not always easy to clean. A cotton blend can be a better choice, especially if it's been treated with a stain-resistant finish. Leather can be an excellent choice for family room furniture, since it's durable, adds character to the room, and is easy to clean.

Synthetic Fabrics
If you prefer a synthetic fabric for your family room furniture upholstery, microfiber is an excellent choice. This is a relatively new fabric, made from polyester fiber, and it is extremely durable as well as comfortable. It's easy to clean, affordable, and is a great choice for family room furniture. Other good synthetic fabric choices include vinyl, which is a good choice for children's furniture that has to be cleaned often, and olefin, which is extremely durable and a good choice for furniture that gets heavy wear.

No matter which fabric you choose, you should take care to pick a good grade of fabric when choosing your family room furniture. Even if it costs a little more, it will be well worth it in the long run.
