Always watch your bathtub when filling them in. Turn the water off when the desired level is reach. You also need to watch your sprinklers when watering your plant. Keep them away from your home. Most importantly, follow maintenance requirements properly.

You should also check your devices like washing machine and dishwasher. Observe them. Check if they are functioning properly. Do not use them if they show signs of problems because this can lead to even greater problems.

Although there are things we can do to prevent flooding at home, some causes are beyond our control. We cannot stop a storm or heavy rains. This is why we need to be prepared. Here are some of the things you can do.

  • Be attentive to weather forecasts especially if you live in areas that are high risk. You have to secure your electrical lines to prevent fire and electrocution. Protect your things too. You can transfer your appliances to higher areas. Anchor some of your things too like the gas tanks.

  • Prevent sewage from entering your home by installing backflows. Talk to your plumber about this. Inquire at the building department before installing them because permits maybe required.

  • Insure your home. There are special insurance that will cover flooding. You can ask some flooding agencies and inquire about their programs. Do not expect the damages to be covered by your home insurance company.

You can prevent flood by monitoring the causes you can control. However, flood is also caused by other natural calamities. This is why you have to be prepared. Prepare to secure your things and to rebuild your home.
