One of the biggest challenges we face during the winter months is keeping the home warm. This will not be difficult if we have prepared for it. However, it is often that we find out about our heating problems when the season arrives. This can be very uncomfortable and expensive. This is why we need to keep the heat in, as much as possible.

There are many ways to keep the heat in our home. Here are some of them:

Check the drafty areas in your home. These drafty areas may be small holes or cracks. However, they can add up and will lose a lot of heat. This is why you need to locate these areas. You can do so by feeling your hand against the walls. Feel if there is a cold air coming in. If there is, put a mark on the area so that you will remember it. After you have located all the drafty spots, seal them. You can also use a candle or an incense to locate them. You will be able to identify such spots if the flame and the smoke moves when place next to the area. Be careful when using a lit candle though.

Close the rooms that you will not use. This way, the heater will only heat a smaller area. Moreover, the areas you frequently use will stay warm. This also reduces the risk of losing more heat.

One of the best ways to keep the heat in during the winter months is proper insulation. To make sure that your home is properly insulated, check your home and look for signs that it has insulation problems. One sign of insulation problem is the cold wall. Touch your wall. If it is cold, then you have some insulating issues. You can also feel the floor. You have insulation issues if the floor is cold. There are also other signs of having insulation problems. One of them is high utility bills. This means that you are spending a lot to heat or to cool your home. You also have problems if the temperature within the house varies. After discovering the problem, deal with them immediately.

Other areas where heat escapes are the attic and the ceiling. This makes it essential that you check these areas. Bear in mind that 10 to 15% of heat escapes through these areas, which is why you have to make sure that it is properly insulated. You can use different materials. One of the common materials used is the glass fiber. Many use them because they are easy to install and they are lightweight. But this is not for everyone. There are other materials to choose from such as cellulose fiber and vermiculate.

Keeping the heat in is very important especially during the winter season. This will not only keep you comfortable, this will also lower your bills. To ensure that heat does not escape, inspect your home. Seal drafty areas and insulate your home properly. When insulating, do not forget the ceiling and the attic as heat can also escape there.
