There is a lot of planning involved when moving property, and lots of things to consider. It is a good idea to create a moving checklist, outlining everything that has to be carried out before and after the move to make sure nothing is forgotten. It will allow you to keep track of what you have done and what you still have to do. Also set yourself a date to have these things done by and stick to it, this way you will not fall behind and have a last minute, stressful rush to get things done.

Organize a moving van to help you to move your possessions. Get quotes from two or three companies in order to ensure you get the best deal, but do not opt for the cheapest company, the cost usually reflects in the service you receive, use an experienced and trusted removal firm, that way you can feel comfortable that your possessions are in safe hands. Make sure your possessions are insured for the transfer, most companies do have policies that cover this.

Before moving into your new house, make a plan of the house and decide what goes where as it will help you decide what you still need to buy for your new home. Any unwanted items or things you do not need, donate them to a charity or sell them, this will decrease clutter in your new home, and you may make some money.

Have a look around the area before you move so you can locate supermarkets and you may want to take the time to register with a dentist and a doctor’s surgery. Do not forget to inform your utility companies of your move, you will need to arrange gas, water and electricity readings of both your old and new property.

You will need lots of boxes and bubble wrap to protect any fragile items you will be carrying. Pack the boxes and mark which rooms they will go in to save any confusion when unpacking. It is a good idea to mark the boxes in order of importance so you know where to start, also ensure any boxes containing fragile items are marked as such so the moving company knows to be careful when handling the box and no items are broken. It is a good idea, a few weeks before you are due to move, to start packing any non essential items; leave the items you will be likely to use until last. If you have young children, leave their packing until last, children sometimes panic and become very unsettled if they do not understand what is going on. Also make sure that you do not pack boxes too heavy, you do not want to hurt yourself as they will be difficult to move and the boxes will be more likely to burst.

Send your change of address to employers, schools, banks, card companies, Council Tax, Inland Revenue, DVLA, TV Licensing and whomever else it may concern. Arrange with the post office to get any mail redirected to your new address, this service will come at a small monthly fee. Also contact the provider of your Internet connection and get it transferred to your new property.

Moving property is a very lengthy process, however whether you're moving to a new flat in Aberdeen or in Dundee, these tips should help you to have a more organized and stress free move.
