House painting in Houston requires, careful research on your part. Referrals are an important part of the process of selecting a painting contractor in Houston. Houston has many fly by night painting contractors. Most of which are unlicensed and/or do really poor work. Getting referrals is the key to success and it shouldn't be a difficult process. You can check with friends, family, and neighbors. In some cases, active realtors in your area may have painting contractors they have worked with in the past. In Houston a good source for referrals is the local paint shop or home improvement center. These guys see house painters all day and may have some insight.

These days the internet is king. There are lots of review sites out there for painting contractors and all other trades for that matter. Sites like kudzu.com was built just for this purpose. Kudzu.com is a place where people can go and voice their opinion about their painter. You can also see reviews in google local. When you search for say "Houston Painting Contractor" in google you'll see the map of Houston and all the local painters. In that listing you'll see "reviews". Check those out.

So now you have a list of referrals you need to contact. What should you ask them? Below are several we would recommend.

  1. What did they do for you?

Painting the interior of a house is much different then the exterior. Make sure the work that was done closely matches what you're having done.

  2. Would you ever let this house painter in your house again?

As you listen to the response to this question, keep in mind that everyone interprets a situation differently. If the response is no, dig in a little bit and find out why. Make sure its a good reason. You can also question the painter later about the situation. Maybe the homeowner was just a real bugger!

  3. Have them rank how happy they were with the job done.

Everyone has varying levels of acceptance. One person may be perfectly fine with a house painting project, but when you look at it you may find it completely unacceptable. If you get a response of "ah pretty good", you may want to visit and have a look for yourself. Have a look at the cut-in work around the windows. How well the cut-in looks is a huge indicator of quality.

  4. Did the painting contractor cover the floors, furniture, etc.?

Make sure the painting contractor covers and protects everything, including the floor. On the inside of your home that may mean moving furniture into a central location so it can easily be protected. For exterior painting make sure the driveway, sidewalks, shrubs, and cars are protected. It wouldn't be a bad idea to stop by a job that's in progress to see for yourself how much care is taken.

  5. Ask if the workers were courteous.

Bringing someone onto your property and into your home is stressful enough but being disrespectful is asking way too much. If the response to this question is negative, walk away and look for another painting contractor. Having an uncourteous painter in your house not only causes you stress but that stress translates into friction between you and the painter. Once that happens all kinds of things can go wrong. The painter can become lazy or sloppy thus making for a very bad situation you'll come to regret.

  6. Did the painting contractor offer a written warranty and did you have to use it?

Ask if the warranty they received was in writing and how long the period of the warranty was for. Naturally, the longer the better. You definitely want to be able to go back to the contractor with in the event something goes wrong with the work completed. Remember - get it in writing!

These are some of the key questions you should ask customers of painting contractors in Houston and for that matter anywhere. Do your homework, know exactly who you're hiring, and you should be on your way to having a great relationship with your painting contractor.
