One of the ways to improve the curb appeal of our home is improving our walkway. We can easily do so with the many materials available in the market. There are different types of pavers available. What is essential is we know which one to choose.

The walkway is important not only because it can help attract potential buyers when you are selling your house. It is also important because you use it everyday. You pass by it when you leave your home. You also use it when you return. If you do not have a good walkway, you could fall or injure yourself.

To have a good walkway, you need to know how to choose the right material. Brick pavers, made of clay and processed to be sturdy, is among the popular options. This is because they are flexible, the color does not fade, it is durable and it does not require a lot of maintenance.

What is great about brick pavers is that you can easily install them by yourself. However, if you are going to do the project, you should allocate enough time because you cannot force to finish this right away or you will not have the results you want. Here are some of the steps you can follow:

  1. Prepare your plan. There are a lot of plans online but you can always come up with your own pattern. This pattern will make it easier for you to start the project. Do not forget to measure the area you will work on as well to ensure that you can prepare the right number of bricks ahead of time.

  2. You also need to prepare the area by digging a trench of around 7 inches deep. Remove the soil and fill about a third of it with gravel. Tamp the gravel and see to it that they are evenly distributed through the area. Once you have leveled the gravel, add sand. Tamp it again and level the surface. There should be enough space left for the bricks.

  3. When the base is ready, add the edging. The edging can be any material. You can use a board. You can also use a paver board, which is more flexible. This is made of vinyl, which also comes in different color. You will surely find a shade that is similar with the color of the brick you are using.

  4. Once the edging is in place, you can start the installation of the brick. When installing the brick, see to it that you do not slide it. Sliding it will move the gravel and the sand causing the base to become uneven. You should also carefully arrange the bricks and make sure that the distances between them are the same.

  5. After arranging all the bricks, you can now add the stone dust or the builders’ sand. Put a generous amount and then start leveling them. You may use a broom to ensure that the material fill the spaces between the bricks.

Installing a brick paver is a great home project. Although it is simple, it can still be challenging.
