No doubt, all parents will do everything to protect their child from getting hurt. This is true even if their children have grown from little kids to adults already. The sense of responsibility to keep one’s child safe is always there.

Imagine how intense parents worry about their child when their child is just a vulnerable little one? Without exaggerating, hazards and dangers are boundless for a baby and toddlers even at the refuge of your own home. Try to crawl around your house on your hands and knees. It may sound absurd, but can definitely open your eyes to a child’s perspective every single day.

Check it out how crucial it is to explore the house when you are so small and naive. See how really safe is your home. Because the fact that unintentional injury is the primary source of death in kids 14 years under, and that more than a third of such injuries do happen at home, is truly alarming. Yes it’s true; one of the reasons why kids under three years old visit the ER is because of household injuries.

So if you plan to implement childproofing in your home, well, don’t just plan but do it now. Supervision is a helpful way to prevent injuries, but sometimes, being extra watchful of your child is not enough. These are just few effective ways to childproof your home.

For babies and toddlers, it’s very important to use safety gates particularly before stairways.
Never ever leave kids unattended while taking a bath. Install outlet covers to prevent electrocution, as well as smoke detectors in each bedroom and kitchen.

Put knob covers on doors—particularly doors to non-childproofed areas and dangerous rooms such as garage, office, kitchen and bathroom. Remove lower locks to avoid accidental locking by child. As for windows, set up safety netting or use window guard or stopper to prevent kids from falling out. But make sure, windows can still be used as emergency exit if necessary.

Leave at least one mobile phone in the house in case of emergency and there is no electricity. Post emergency numbers next to all phones. Don’t forget to include nearest ER or hospital, pediatrician, poison control center, nearest police and fire station.

Keep choking hazards, poisonous, toxic, sharp and hot items out of reach. These items include soap, detergents, alcohol, kitchen knives, heavy pans, breakables and others alike. If you own guns and other items used for self-defense like pepper spray and teargas, make sure they are kept away from child’s reach as well.

Remove window blind cord or any hanging cord that has loops as it can cause strangulation. Leave appliances and electric devices unplugged when not in use, and keep the cords coiled and out of their reach.

Put bumpers in any edges or sharp corners of furniture. Remove glass top and table covers that might be pulled down along with heavy and breakable items on them.

Keep toilet seat cover closed to prevent accidental drowning. Use non-skid bathmat and rugs on floor to prevent slipping, and secure that trash can has lid and not accessible to children.

Take measures to protect your kids from household dangers before it’s too late. Don’t stick to these childproof measures alone; review them as frequent as you can to see if you missed anything.
