As a contractor many people have asked me for an inexpensive way to refurbish the look of their kitchen cabinets, without the cost and hassle associated with the typical kitchen remodel. They also wanted to find something they could do themselves to save even more money.

There are several approaches to inexpensive kitchen cabinet refurbishing. The easiest is to simply repaint or refinish your existing kitchen cabinets. This is as simple as cleaning your cabinets priming and painting them. For the best results your probably going to want to remove the doors and drawers and do a thorough job. If your cabinets are stained you can and although not always recommended, strip down the existing varnish or lacquer (whatever was used to finish your cabinets) and do a light sanding and re-stain. This is very labor intensive and messy.

One of the better methods to approach a kitchen cabinet refurbishing project is to replace the cabinet doors and along with buying new custom cabinet doors you should get new hinges. Unless your kitchen cabinets have 35mm European cabinet door hinges already that you can reuse, I would highly recommend purchasing them along with your custom cabinet door order. A company that I use routinely offers these hinges along with custom cabinet doors. The large 35mm hinge hole come pre-drilled into the door so all you have to do is attach the hinge and hang the door. These hinges are also fully adjustable so dialing in the door gaps are a piece of cake.

The advantage of buying new custom cabinet doors and drawer fronts is that you can get the look that you want for much less. Even if you stripped the old cabinet doors it would barley be worth the mess and expense of new ones. Also all the dings and large scratches that your old cabinet doors have received over the years will most likely remain under that new shinny paint or varnish your going to apply. That’s why I'm a big proponent for just replacing them. It makes for a much cleaner job. Every kitchen situation is different, but in my years of kitchen remodeling, most of my clients that wanted me to do an affordable kitchen cabinet refurbishing typically had builder grade cabinets or in some of the older homes just a simple painted slab cabinet door. In either case ordering new doors proved to be a major upgrade to what they had originally.

Replacing kitchen cabinet doors is a relatively simple affair. In most of my remodels I always purchased new cabinet door hinges with the door order. One of the more common types are ½" overlay hinges. When measuring you add ½" all the way around to the cabinet opening. This is a pretty standard overlay and is easy to figure. Once you know all the cabinet door dimensions you can simply place your order and you're good to go. Once you receive your new cabinet doors it’s a simple matter of hanging them and applying a paint or stain.
The link below is the place I use routinely. They have the very best prices and the quality is unsurpassed.
