One of the problems that comes with living in an area where the air is humid at certain times of year, is toxic household mold. This seemingly innocuous issue can cause not only serious damage to property, but more importantly, it can be extremely hazardous to residents' health.

Molds, of one kind or another, are constantly around us. They are an essential part of the environment and occur in places wherever moisture can be found, and most types are of little concern to us. Their spores fill the air, and enter our homes in significant quantities. But there are some kinds of mold that find our living spaces perfect for settling, and multiplying. Household mold problems can present serious problems for the occupants, and prevention is the key to avoiding long-term issues.

If molds develop in our houses or apartments, they can cause serious respiratory problems and allergies, resulting in severe illness. Sufferers may be inflicted by irritation to the skin, excessive tiredness, bloodshot eyes, a runny or bleeding nose and a weakened immunity system. There are many kinds of potentially troublesome molds, and they can thrive in all temperatures. It is important that householders try and keep home interiors as dry as possible, and deal with any initial signs of molding.

If early indications of mold are detected in the home, they can be treated relatively easily, depending on the surface material. Wearing safety goggles, dust mask and rubber gloves for personal safety, one can apply a detergent solution to an affected area. It is advisable to use an unscented detergent, as it will increase the chances of detecting any remaining moldy odors, which might otherwise be masked by artificial perfumes. If the mold returns, or persists, professional help is advisable. Be aware that cleaning a moldy area will only solve a problem temporarily, and that locating a source of moisture, and fixing it, is the best way to eliminate the problem permanently.

To help prevent mold from forming in a property, it is essential to keep all areas dry, and free from moisture. In humid climates, use a dehumidifier to help reduce air moisture. Keeping live plants in a home is also considered helpful, as they absorb moisture from the air. A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter will keep mold infestations to a minimum, while removing allergy irritants from the atmosphere.

If you think that you can detect a distinct musty odor, or if you discover areas of mold in your property, consider seeking professional advice. Experienced inspectors will be able to locate all infestations and recommend relevant treatments, ensuring you and your family can enjoy a safe, and comfortable home.
