The historic Hewson House in Whittier, Minnesota has been put under the care of a coalition which plans to renovate the property and bring it to a condition where it can qualify as one of the commercial houses for sale in the community. The property is 105 years old and has fallen into disrepair following a foreclosure.

The coalition tasked to preserve the home is made up of Bell Mortgage, Preservation Alliance Minnesota (PAM) and Whittier Alliance. The group plans to rehabilitate the mansion which was purchased by Bell for $200,000 from TCF Bank. The property has been included in PAM's list of endangered historic places.

According to officials from Bell, the house will be renovated and brought to a saleable level of condition. The coalition will then look for a buyer who is willing to occupy the mansion for at least three years. Officials further added that it is important for the neighborhood of Whittier to have historic properties like Hewson occupied by residents to stop the growing trend of historic places being used for commercial purposes.

Before the property can be one of the community's commercial houses for sale, extensive renovation works need to be done, according to the people behind the preservation plan. The mansion was constructed in 1905 and designed by the Kees and Colburn architectural firm. The interior was the work of John Bradstreet who is also known for his interior work on the Duluth property, Glensheen Mansion.

The historic mansion was foreclosed in 2009 after previous owners used it as a foster home for 10 years. According to local reports, several fixtures were lost, including a mural that was estimated to be worth $150,000. People behind the preservation effort are hopeful that some of the items taken or purchased from the property can be taken back, with some needing to be bought back, while others will hopefully be donated by previous buyers out of consideration for the historic status of the property.

The coalition behind the renovation of Hewson House is expecting renovation expenses for the property to reach up to $200,000. They further added that with this estimate, the house can be offered as one of the commercial houses for sale for as low as $400,000.
