We have all sort wastes from our home. However, not everything can be placed in a trash bag, just like the wastewater. So how do we manage it? The septic system allows us to dispose of the wastewater properly. It treats the waste to make it acceptable to the environment.

Think of what our yard would look like without such system. How would it smell? Besides, it would be very unsanitary too. This is why it is important that we pay attention to our septic system. We should know what type of system to install as well as how to choose the right system. Additionally, it is important that we know how to maintain it properly.

The first thing you need to understand is the several types of septic systems, which are classified into two basic categories. These are the conventional and the alternative systems. When choosing the right system for your home, you should consider the type of soil you have. You should also check your location and follow what has been recommended in the area.

It also has two basic components. These are the tank and the leaching bed. The tank is where the waste is stored and partially treated. The organic matter breaks here too. This is also where liquid and solid waste is separated.

How do you install a septic system?

Before installing the said system, you should visit the agency responsible for the building codes in your community. Find out what their requirements are as well as their rules and regulations. You need to follow their requirements. Moreover, seek out the size of the tank you should build. An inspector should give you an estimate after knowing the number of people living in the house. Finally, file for the needed permit. You can have your contractor do this for you.

Septic system maintenance

Maintenance is very important if you want the system to continue functioning. But before that, see to it that you have a site map of the system so that you can find it easily when you need to inspect or repair it.

Pumping should be done at least once in five years. This is to remove solid waste that will accumulate and leak if you do not remove them. Bear in mind that waste goes to the tank daily. If you do not remove the wastes that have piled up there, you will eventually encounter problems and this may even lead to damaging your system.

You should also do a regular inspection of the septic tank and the entire system. Do this once a year. For some systems, they require inspection once in three years. Consult your builder regarding this. Regular inspection allows you to check if there are any damages. This gives you the chance to repair them right away.

Do not direct runoffs to your septic system as well. Too much water will affect how the system functions. You should also make sure that the access lid is closed at all times. Water can get in through these points too.

Finally, do not flush materials that the system could not handle. You might think that a piece of tissue paper cannot harm the system. However, this can be destructive when accumulated. Other materials are not decomposable too, so make sure you do not throw your trash in the toilet bowl or the sink.
