Dubbed the “New Green Paradise” by some, the Riviera Maya is fast becoming the discerning golfer’s favorite location in Mexico. A plethora of world-class courses and country clubs have sprung up in the last decade and a good number more will open their fairways soon.

The first ever PGA tournament was held on the Caribbean coast here in 2007 and with courses designed and backed by the likes of Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, and Robert Trent Jones Jr, it’s little wonder why this is one of the world’s fastest growing hotspots for luxury golf and golf real estate.

The natural Yucatan Peninsula jungle, lagoons and turquoise Caribbean waters make for a spectacular backdrop to swing against. Add to that a tropical mix of alligators, lizards and colorful birds and you’ll find yourself chasing that little white ball around a paradise. (They also make for some interesting local rules!)

Many levels of course allow both beginners and pros to find something to their taste and the fantastic tropical climate, with a yearly average of 78.8 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees centigrade) allows you to enjoy playing all year round.

As well as the landscape, some courses feature fascinating historical landmarks such as Mayan ruins and other cultural sites of interest. Clubhouses, bars and restaurants feature alongside and you’ll be sure to enjoy the 19th hole just as much as the other 18 you just played.

Wherever you are along the Riviera Maya coast you’ll never be more than an hour from your nearest course. You’ll usually need your own transport to get there, although some courses offer a pick-up service with the green fee.

If you take a taxi you’re most likely to find that the driver knows every local golf course and can quote you the rate upfront, possible the green fee too.

Until you have your own golf real estate property to store them in, you’ll probably want to leave your clubs at home. Unless you play every day it’s not really worth carrying your own set over on a plane when you can hire good quality wood and irons for as little as $30 USD.
At RE/MAX Investment Properties we know the Mexican golf landscape better than most local caddies. We have plenty of information available and can recommend our favorite courses and country clubs. Just let us know if you need any more tips on where to play or where to find the best golf real estate deals.
