A residence will be made available to several veterans by next month in Kennewick, Washington. The dwelling will be fitted with appliances for home and other amenities that will provide some security to around six homeless veterans in the areas. The project is the brainchild of the Columbia Basin Veterans Coalition.

According to the Coalition, there are at least 80 veterans in the area who are homeless and out of jobs. Upon hearing of the plight of these soldiers, the Coalition applied for a grant from the city and was able to secure a four-bedroom residence located near grocery stores, bus lines and other necessary premises. The foreclosed property was being offered through Kennewick's Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

Aside from securing a clean title for the house, the group was also able to get the Home Depot's pledge to provide materials for the renovation and repair of the residential property. In addition, the city has promised to install appliances for home with the help of funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Help from other local organizations in the form of money and time was also offered to complete the project. Associations like Habitat for Humanity, Young Professionals of the Tri-Cities and several other civic organizations have pledged to help in the renovation of the property, while some have provided financial aid.

The house, estimated to be worth $200,000, will be the home of several veterans where they will be allowed to stay for two years without rent. This, according to Coalition members, will give them ample time to look for a job, attend counseling or go back to school if they wanted to. The residence has been dubbed "transition house" by the Coalition since it will serve as home to those who need to re-acclimate to the life of a civilian following combat participation.

The Veterans Coalition has revealed that the project also aims to integrate homeless veterans into the neighborhood and encourage them to be part of the local community. The organization has also stated that it is planning to seek a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs to pay for some of the appliances for home and basic needs of those who will live in the premises.
