Maintaining your family's safety isn't only about having high security. It is also about making your surroundings free from health risks. However, many people failed to accomplish this. This is because of the existence of indoor pollutants.

In case you don't know, indoor pollutants exist and they come from areas of the house you wouldn't suspect in the world to have contained them. The existence of these pollutants reduces the quality of air. And as your family continues to breathe polluted air, problems to health can take place.

Asbestos and lead have been identified to be part of the most dangerous indoor pollutants. They are commonly present in old homes that have existed before the 1970's. Their presence isn't something that you should take lightly. If you want to know why, find out the reasons below:

Asbestos exposure- May lead to cancer like mesothelioma and lung cancer. It's not a hunch but studies have proven such. Asbestosis is also another famous health illness associated with such exposure.

Lead Exposure- Ingestion or contact can be absorbed easily in the body, especially for the kids. Once this happens, they may develop abnormalities as they grow older. There are also various health problems that could happen to exposed adults. This may include infertility, abortion and other nervous system abnormalities.

There are several things you can do to eliminate exposure or even decrease the risk of exposure. Here are some tips to follow:

  1. Have your home inspected to determine if they exist or not. Professionals are equipped with the knowledge to test the presence of these pollutants in your home. This should be mandatory for old homes.

  2. Avoid DIY activities if you are not sure what insulation materials have been used in your homes. Drilling, sanding and other construction related activities may destroy the integrity of their sources; hence, causing contamination to air, floor and other parts of the home. If you want to renovate an old home, have a professional do it.

  3. Always clean your home. The fibers of asbestos or dusts of lead can exist anywhere the property. This should not only be done for indoors but outdoors as well.

  4. When you rent a home or buy a house, it is best that you ask about the history of the property. Anyone landowner or seller is obliged to disclose any health hazards to their buyers or renters.

  5. Do not buy toys or furniture with lead paint. Make sure you read labels. If you found out that lead paint is being used, dispose the item properly.
