Today, with the need to go green, protect, and preserve the environment and our health as well, making intelligent choices when you purchase home appliances is of vital importance. Buying energy-efficient home appliances does not only help the environment but also plays a big role in saving energy and reducing your utility bills.

Furthermore, studies and reports revealed that the use of energy in the home everyday causes more pollution than a car. One of the main reasons for this is that power plants that burn fossils generate the energy used in homes. Keep in mind that air pollution greatly contributes to global warming. One of the most efficient ways that a home could cut down on air pollution is through the use of energy-efficient appliances.

When you purchase home appliances, make sure that you buy those with Energy Star rating. The more star ratings, the more efficient the appliance. Before you purchase a home appliance, consider the items below:

  1. Find out if you really need to purchase it or are there less costly ways to do the same thing.

  2. What it will cost you to run the appliance.

  3. Buy the appropriate appliance for your needs.

  4. Check out the water-efficiency when buying a dishwasher or washing machine and do not forget to check out the number of stars the appliance has.

  5. Consider several options to electric-powered appliances like gas-fired or heat pump clothes dryer.

  6. Take time to determine the energy amount consumed by the appliance that you plan on buying.

  7. Keep in mind that from outside, all appliances look the same so before buying, make sure that the appliance fits your home or your office.

  8. Make sure that you read the yellow and black energy guide label. The label displays the amount of energy that is consumed by the appliance every year. Before you purchase, make sure to compare the efficiency of the appliance of several brands. Most brands provide cash rebates to promote their products and encourage the consumers to purchase energy-efficient appliances.

The furnishings, components and fixtures should be positioned in such a way that it is located for optimum energy utilization viewpoint. For instance, grouping together appliances with same functions allow localization of special requirements for certain tasks and result to lower cost and lower operating expenses. Make sure to group together high heat equipment such as lab areas or computer centers with separate HVAC equipment.

Keep in mind that appliances with Energy Star rating are around ten to fifty percent more efficient compared to standard products and conform to technical specifications which are updated constantly. For example, Energy Star qualified and standard compact dishwashers feature not just reduced energy consumption but lower consumption of water as well. Some product categories such as dryers and ranges do not qualify for the Energy Star rating but have energy saving features to look for. Bear in mind that when you replace your old appliances with new ones, you will be doing your share of protecting nature and preserving the environment.
