There is a difference on how long a gas or electric water heater last. Gas water heater lasts for almost 10 years while the electric water heater can lasts for up to 15 years. These anode rods, or sacrificial rods, are the ones that protect the tank. These may be difficult to remove so you might need some expert plumber to do it or if you could do it on your own, it might save your undamaged water heater and you might not change it in some more years to come. In some cases an abrupt inspection on these rods will give you the hint if you have to replace them.

Some people ask if water heater should be changed because it’s old. The answer might be easy. If you don’t do some maintenance on your water heater once in a while, it must be replaced with a new one. But if you don’t have any idea how long this water heater has been used, you could want to rely on the serial number or the warranty data on the heater’s tag.

However, if the water heater doesn’t show any problems when in use or it’s still giving you the heat that you need, it might not be replaced after all.
