Lots of homeowners of foreclosed homes just leave their pets behind, not being concerned with how these pets will survive life without food and water.

It is hard to imagine how such people can take abandoning their pets. Sometimes, they are just too depressed to be thinking about their pets. Often, they just hope their pets will get rescued by the bank personnel or city officials.

But why do these homeowners of foreclosed homes abandon pets? Remember that distressed homeowners have ended up with foreclosure due to the following reasons:

  • Unemployment

  • Incapacitation

  • Medical Situation

  • Job transfer

  • Excessive debt

  • Pending Divorce

Some apartments do not allow pets. And since most foreclosed homeowners are most likely to transfer to an apartment, they usually just choose to leave their pets behind.

In most states, pets are considered a personal property, which means in case of foreclosure, they are subject to the lender's seizure. However, most lenders do not want to take care of pets.

Some state laws do not allow forfeiture of personal property until a certain period of time, which means lenders are prevented from taking the pets.

The following are ways to rescue abandoned pets:

  • Before a house gets foreclosed, ask the homeowners about their plans for their pets.

  • Take the pets to an animal welfare agency.

  • Show some animal rescue literature to foreclosed homeowners.

  • When the house has been vacated, check for any pets left behind.

  • Ask your local humane society in how to rescue abandoned pets.

  • Ask a local real estate agent to do the home inspection for abandoned pets.

  • Call the police for any form of animal cruelty.

  • Give water to a dehydrated pet and contact a vet for food questions.

Do not keep blaming foreclosed homeowners for leaving their pets behind. Just do something to rescue the abandoned pets.
