The Department of Energy stated that the average American family spends over $1,600 each year on their utility bills. Purchasing the latest and most efficient appliances could be effective ways to lower utility costs but the upfront costs are sometimes staggering. Nevertheless, the good news is that there are ways to lower your yearly utility bills for electricity, water, heating and cooling bills.

This article provides you with tips on how to effectively lower your utility costs and allow you to use the money on other household expenses. Below are tips to lower your yearly utility expenses.

  1. Seal off gaps and leaks around your home by caulking, weather-stripping and using heat-safe tape. These are easy to find and inexpensive and allows you to seal leaks and gaps in and around your home.

  2. If you have several heating zones in your home, consider installing door sweeps. They cost around $5-10 and are easy to install.

  3. Install a programmable thermostat and set it several degrees lower when you are at work or away from home and set it lower still at bedtime. Programmable thermostats can be purchased under $50.

  4. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact-fluorescent bulbs. Compact bulbs use around 75 percent less energy and lasts ten times longer than incandescent bulbs.

  5. Power strips are great to use because even in sleep mode, your computer, DVD player and other electronic appliances use some energy. By plugging them into power strips and turning the power off, you will be able to use less electricity.

  6. Cleaning and maintaining all your appliances are vital in lowering your utility costs. Clean or replace filter furnace and drain sediment from the water heater as often as the manual recommends. Keep in mind that your appliances last longer and work more effectively when they are clean and maintained.

  7. Install faucet aerators because they use less water even when you turn on taps at the same time. They cost about $2 per piece or less.

  8. Instead of using the drying cycle on the dishwasher, consider air-drying your dishes instead to save energy. When the washing is done, you can open the door and the wire racks serve as drying racks.

  9. If you do not have a new toilet, simulate a low flush toilet by putting a weighted mason jar, clean brick or a sealed plastic bottle filled with pebbles in the tank. This displaces water so you use less water each time you flush.

  10. Do not waste energy by putting hot food and letting the fridge turn on its maximum chilling power. If you are located in a colder area, you can ice up containers filled with water, put them outside and place them in the freezer to boost cooling.

  11. When buying new appliances, be on the lookout for appliances with Energy Star ratings. They are more efficient than other models.

Indeed, you can lower your utility bills by taking time to do something about it, even simple things like unplugging electronic devices and appliances when they are not in use. If you follow the above methods, you can definitely find a decrease on your utility bills when the next bill arrives.
